If you’re an aspiring lawyer looking for international experience in a specific area of law without having to leave home, then this is the internship for you. There is a broad portfolio of placements available on this remote law internship out of Spain, and internships are customized to suit you. Interns can request placements in a range of legal fields, including tax, accounting, labor, mediation, criminal, family, civil, technology, immigration, gender violence, youth offending, wealth planning, and corporate law. These requests will be accommodated wherever possible, but are not guaranteed.
As a virtual law intern, you’ll be placed in a local law firm, NGO or other company, assisting a local lawyer with all aspects of their work. Due to the breadth of possible placements, the nature of interns duties can vary greatly. General duties can include (but may not be limited to):
- Researching existing court cases and preparing for trials
- Reviewing and drafting legal documents
- Assisting in online interviews
While interns may not play an active role in advocacy or court hearings, you can gain an understanding of the legal process and how to prepare for court proceedings. You’ll be able to reflect on hearings with your supervisor afterwards to ask questions and further understand the process. You’ll be in regular contact with your supervisor through virtual meetings, where you’ll report back on your progress, receive feedback, updates and new tasks. One popular law internship is with a top tier professional football/soccer club in Valencia, where interns can gain experience applying copyrighting law to product licencing situations. This internship is conducted in English, or in Spanish by agreement with your internship supervisor. Online Spanish language lessons can be arranged in conjunction with your remote internship if you’d like to further develop your language skills.
In all cases, interns should expect that the initial phase of their remote internship will focus on gaining some introductory knowledge. You may start by gaining an understanding or overview of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

I chose to intern in Italy because I wanted to live in another country, learn more about and experience another culture, and learn Italian. I learned a lot through this internship. I would say the most important skill I learned is how to better communicate with people. Until this internship, I had never really thought about how difficult it might be to communicate with others who do not speak the same language as you. Most people in the United States either speak English or Spanish, and I speak both of those. This internship has taught me how to use my resources, such as hand gestures, charades, pointing at objects, and Google Translate to effectively communicate. I had to communicate with people from across the world in a mix of languages and hand gestures to ascertain their needs, such as clothes, hygiene products, and more, and do my best to provide what we could. My biggest piece of advice would be to keep an open mind and be willing to be adaptable. Showing that you are trying and want to learn about the different cultures shows respect, and often in turn others will respect you more and have more patience with you while trying to communicate.
My internship contributed to my long-term goal of pursuing legal practice and becoming a lawyer. I learned that you need to demonstrate that you can work independently and critically analyze your own work. In particular, doing the internship remotely allowed me to enhance my communication skills and to approach tasks in new ways. Applying these valuable skills has made me more proactive and detail oriented with my work. I was able to get a head start against my peers to go into the field of my choice.
