I definitely enjoyed building relationships the most. Whether they be with the service users or placement staff, I felt excited to learn more about each person. As I have struggled with generalised and social anxiety for years, I feel this has been a transformative experience in enhancing my confidence and sense of self-worth. I feel so fortunate to have gained my first placement experience within the psychological field in Greece. From understanding the different therapeutic modalities of psychologists, to observing group therapy interactions, I have no doubt that this internship will prove invaluable to me in my career in Psychology.
I chose to intern abroad as I really wanted to see what it was like working in another culture, for my own personal growth and professional experience. Ive had a great time as I was given a lot of insight into group therapy, motivating me to work in this area one day.
I chose this program through RISEWAYbecause I wanted to get a greater insight into mental health from a different perspective in a different setting. I wanted to use the multicultural competence I've learned in my therapy back home in the US. I want to work with refugees and immigrants in the future so in this way, I wanted to gain a broader perspective from different people and cultures. Ive had a great experience and learned a lot of different things, a lot of different therapeutic methodologies, met some great people and learned alot from them and the different psycho therapists in Athens. Overall I have really enjoyed my time.
Everything was enjoyable. Working in a university department surrounded by many talented people working on exciting projects was a great environment. Living and experiencing the culture of another country was also enjoyable. The experience in adapting to a new environment to work on a real project will help my professional development.
What I enjoyed the most was how helpful the doctors I worked with were. If I wasn't sure of anything in Greek, they were happy to explain to me in English.
The field work and eventual research opportunity gave me the chance to gauge my interest in continuing field work for future studies. It also gave me a chance to interact with those of several outside countries, many of which more than helpful to me and my experience.
