An international internship is an excellent way to gain practical career experience and - if you attend a UK university - it’s worth looking at whether you are eligible to apply for funding through the Turing Scheme.
Looking for the most affordable way to intern abroad? RISEWAYoffers economical packages for international internship experiences, with accommodation, meals, airport pickup, and comprehensive in-country support all included. At the same time, there are a range of universities that offer financial support to students who are seeking an immersive internship abroad. Educators understand how important it is to unlock international experiences for their students. After all, theory happens in a classroom - but learning happens through experience!
If you’re enrolled as a student with a registered UK or British Overseas Territories academic institution, then read on. You may be eligible to access funding via the Turing Scheme, which is the UK’s global program for supporting international educational experiences.
What is the Turing Scheme?
The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s program to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. Each year, UK and British Overseas Territories universities can apply for funding for projects that offer the opportunity to study or gain work experience abroad. The universities then directly distribute the funds to eligible students. Turing funds can apply to any internship program of at least 28 days, or 4 weeks.
Interning in a different country with the Turing Scheme allows you to improve your communication, language and intercultural skills, as well as soft skills highly valued by future employers.
How to find the best Turing internship programs:
To be eligible for a Turing grant, you can intern in any country outside the UK. When selecting your Turing internship program, the key things you should consider are:
Find an internship abroad that meets Turing Scheme requirements:
-
To be eligible for Turing funding, your internship abroad must be relevant for your degree-related learning and personal development needs. The internship duration must be a minimum of 4 weeks.
-
To find an internship abroad program that fits your career ambitions and is eligible for Turing funding, you can browse 300+ internships spanning diverse career fields, all available through Intern Abroad HQ. To make this process easier, the RISEWAYteam can advise you on how to select the right internship program for you and support you with the paperwork required for your Turing funding application.
Consider the total cost of your internship alongside the Turing Scheme grant:
The total cost of your internship will vary depending on the destination you choose - see the fees here. For example, you can choose a destination that’s geographically closer to you to secure cheaper airfares. A short-term internship (just 2-4 weeks, for example) will be relatively affordable, compared to a long-term internship (8 weeks or longer). This is because the program fee includes accommodation (and in many cases, meals too). Therefore, you can control your costs by interning for short periods.
Your Turing Scheme grant will be a huge help, but may not cover the expenses for your entire internship or your independent travel on the weekends. Therefore, it is worth considering the cost of living in each destination to ensure you choose one that will fit your budget.
- Choose from 317 internships across 24 career fields, available year-round
- Fully hosted internships abroad from only $1129 (approximately 1129) for 2 weeks
- Flexible remote internships from only $1099 (approximately 1099) for 3 weeks
- Intern for 2 - 24 weeks, with year-round start dates
- Customized to meet your academic requirements and career goals
How to secure your Turing Scheme funding:
-
Once you have selected your internship abroad, ensure that you submit your application with Intern Abroad HQ. It doesn’t cost anything to apply. You’ll be put in touch with our team of Program Managers, who can assist you going forward.
-
You will also need to apply for Turing funds through the Student Mobility or Turing Scheme office at your own university. The staff in this office will be knowledgeable about the Turing program and able to guide you through the funding application process (which varies by university). RISEWAYis always on hand to help provide any supporting documentation that you might need for this process.
-
You can still confirm your participation with RISEWAY(even prior to your funding being released). Take advantage of our Flexi Booking option if you’re booking more than 4 months in advance and need a higher degree of flexibility. The deposit payment serves as the first installment of the program fee total. The deadline for payment of the remaining balance is calculated according to your chosen start date. Therefore, the further you plan in advance, the more time you have to budget.
-
As a final tip - if you book early enough, you’ll be eligible to use our program fee installment plan (and you’ll likely be able to purchase more affordable flights too, rather than planning last-minute travel over peak summer periods).
