While engineering plays a pivotal role in driving progress, innovation, and sustainable development, Tanzania’s urbanization challenges include lack of planned housing and poor public infrastructure. As an intern, you’ll collaborate alongside industry professionals assisting in the development of a fast growing urban city, while navigating underdeveloped and under-resourced infrastructure.

This internship experience is designed to be hands-on, as interns contribute within a team whose work and expertise span across projects. For example, building works, civil engineering works, mechanical engineering, real estate development, water works, specialist plumbing and sanitation, ventilation systems, and electrical works.

Interns generally have broad scope to assist with a range of different projects relevant to their background and level of experience. You’ll participate under the guidance of an experienced supervisor, participating in client meetings and consultations, site visits, surveys, performing quality assurance checks and the planning, implementation or construction of large scale projects. Engineering interns need to be organized, self-motivated and have good communication skills. It is important that interns be prepared to adapt to the living conditions and professional practices of a new country. Flexibility is also important for international engineering interns whose responsibilities may include a variety of different projects, depending on their specific placement and the needs of their employer.

In all cases, interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, as you will not “hit the ground running”. Rather, you should start with learning about the placement to gain an understanding of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.

Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary, as the specific placement that you’re assigned will depend on review of your resume and your current level of studies and experience. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

• Schedules vary based on the exact nature of each internship. Interns should prepare to be flexible with their schedules, but expect between 6-8 hours of work each day, Monday through Friday.
